What does hanok mean to today’s generation? Older generations may have memories of living in a hanok as a child or visiting relatives who lived in one. However, for younger people who have been exposed to hanok in a similar way culturally as they have been to Buddhist temples and palaces, hanok are often thought of as historical artifacts that need to be preserved in their old, taxidermized form.Hanok Today is not an informational book that answers all of your questions with detailed descriptions about every hanok in every photo. Rather, the authors distill the individuality and essence of each hanok and beautifully arrange the images to convey the meaning of the space, inviting readers to see, feel, and think for themselves. Follow along with the text and photographs through the eyes of the two authors and add your own interpretation to them as you go.

오늘 날 주거 형태의 대다수를 이루는 콘크리트 아파트와 대척점에 있는 것으로 여겨지는 한옥에 대해 우리는 막연히 ‘현대적 생활양식에는 적합하지 않다’는 심상을 가지기 쉽다. 하지만 전통적 외관을 유지하면서도 변화한 삶의 양식까지 잘 담아낼 수 있게 재탄생한 사례도 적지 않다.몇 년 전 지인이 새롭게 지은 한옥에 방문했던 저자는, 어린 시절의 기억과는 너무도 딴판인 현대적인 실내 모습에 깜짝 놀랐다고 서문에서 밝히고 있다. 저자 는 이와 같은 추세에 맞추어, 전통을 넘어 현대적인 삶에 맞게 변화해 가는 한옥들을 소개하고자 이 책을 집필하였다. 안국동에서 우이동으로, 가회동과 계동을 거쳐 삼청동과 서촌, 조암리와 부암동, 장충동에서 정동에 이르기까지 열다섯 채의 한옥을 나름의 관점으로 관찰하고 채집한 이 결과물은 한옥의 아름다움을 충분히 잘 드러내고 있다.고전적인 한옥은 옥외에서 먼 화장실, 밤새 아궁이의 불을 지켜야 하는 불편함을 담고 있는 것이었다. 그러나 급변하는 생활상에 맞추어 한옥 역시 진화를 거듭하고 있다. 예를 들면 화동재의 현대적 감각을 띤 목욕채, 부암정의 부엌을 포함한 내 · 외부에서 보이는 전통과 신식의 조화를 꼽을 수 있겠다. 이 책에서 다룬 한옥들이 현대적 생활 양식에 걸맞은 건축 요소들을 어떤 식으로 기존의 틀에 녹여 냈는지 감상하고 공유하는 것은 우리 한옥을 세계 속에 투사할 수 있는 계기가 될 것이다.

Korea is a nation that has radically transformed itself in recent decades, yet amidst the glass-and-steel skyscrapers and luxury apartments, the Korean design of the hanok still survives and plays a surprisingly important role. Nani Park is a Seoul-based author, artist, and hanok curator whose work bridges Korean architectural heritage with a global audience. Born in Korea and raised in Hawaii, she brings a rare dual perspective - intimate insider knowledge paired with an outsider's eye for what makes hanok universally compelling.Her book Hanok: The Korean House grew from a deeply personal mission: a realization that despite the quiet resurgence of hanok culture in Seoul, well-crafted English-language resources were nearly impossible to find. Drawing from her own early experiences living in a hanok, she set out to change that - one beautifully photographed home at a time.With over two decades of experience as an illustrator and art educator, and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Park's creative lens is as sharp as her curatorial instinct. Based in Seoul with her husband, Park remains deeply embedded in the city's cultural fabric - always seeking out undiscovered hanok and the latest in art and design. A mother of three, she brings the same warmth and discerning eye to her writing that defines everything she does.
